Education in the Mother Tongue: A Right for Every Child

To truly educate any nation, its people must be taught in their own language. When children learn in their mother tongue, they understand lessons more clearly, express themselves more confidently, and develop knowledge more quickly than when they are taught in a foreign language. Education becomes meaningful when it speaks the language of the heart.

For the Rohingya community, language is more than a tool of communication — it is identity, culture, and history. Teaching children in their own language helps preserve that identity while also strengthening academic achievement. Research around the world has consistently shown that mother-tongue-based education improves comprehension, critical thinking, and long-term learning outcomes.

Today, some Rohingya children are receiving education in their own language at Mukti Cox’s Bazar, with the support of Children on the Edge. This initiative is not only helping children learn more effectively but is also restoring dignity and pride within the community. When a child opens a book written in their own language, they see themselves reflected in its pages.

Such efforts should serve as an example for all NGOs and educational organizations working with Rohingya children. Providing education in the mother tongue enables students to progress faster, build stronger foundations, and transition more successfully into additional languages later. It is not only an educational strategy — it is a human right.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mukti Cox’s Bazar and Children on the Edge for their commitment to Rohingya-language education. Their support demonstrates that inclusive and culturally respectful education is possible.

We hope this important work will continue and expand, ensuring that every Rohingya child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed in their own language.
