They endure poverty, struggle to survive in inadequate shelters with inadequate roofs and sleeping spaces. In contrast, Rohingya children in Myanmar resided in spacious compound homes with playgrounds, shaded trees, and designated areas for rest, socializing, and play. Those homes provided a safe and conducive environment for children’s well-being, fostering a sense of belonging and reducing fear of living conditions.
However, Rohingya refugee children are becoming a lost generation due to the limited opportunities and facilities available in the camps. Despite their aspirations to become better citizens, educators, and students, capable of contributing to their communities and countries, they face obstacles that hinder their progress.
Some children express their frustration, stating that their dreams remain unfulfilled due to the absence of essential resources and opportunities within the camps.
Others maintain their unwavering hope, believing that with perseverance and determination, they can overcome their challenges and achieve their aspirations. They recognize that there will be opportunities that arise to help them realize their dreams.
In a historic event, nearly 300,000 Rohingya children are now enrolled in learning centers within the Rohingya camp. However, the majority of these children are found engaging in activities such as playing on roadsides, beside shelters, in empty spaces, and other areas during their school hours. Furthermore, some children are observed engaging in child labor to support their families.
These children require robust support from the international community to demonstrate their potential for greatness. With adequate resources and opportunities, they can achieve their aspirations. It is imperative that the international community provides them with the necessary support to fulfill their dreams.
