Feran Katu, a 63-year-old widow residing alone in a small shelter within the Balukhali refugee camp, faces significant challenges in her daily life. Without children or a husband, she has endured widowhood for an extended period, struggling to survive independently in the world’s largest refugee camp.
Katu primarily relies on humanitarian assistance to meet her basic needs. Due to the absence of income sources, she is unable to generate sufficient funds to cover her daily expenses. Her advanced age has left her vulnerable to various age-related illnesses, necessitating substantial monthly healthcare costs. Consequently, she resorts to selling her rations to finance her medical expenses.
In her old age, Katu ventures into various parts of the camps, gathering spinach from diverse plants and bundling them in her shelter to earn a modest income. She sells these spinach bundles door-to-door, exchanging small amounts daily to supplement her income.
