The United States to Provide Nearly $200 Million for Rohingya.
The United States has announced an allocation of nearly $200 million in additional aid for the Rohingya crisis. This announcement was made during a special meeting at the United Nations General Assembly last week, where it was revealed that $199 million will be directed toward supporting refugees in Bangladesh, assisting local communities, and addressing regional needs.
This aid will be channeled through various U.S. agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), to support Rohingya refugees and the organizations hosting them, as noted by Uzra Zeya, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights.
Of the total funding, over $129 million will be allocated to USAID, with nearly $70 million earmarked for the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Notably, $78 million of USAID’s budget will be used to purchase agricultural products from American farmers for distribution to Rohingya refugees and local organizations in Bangladesh.
Zeya emphasized that this new assistance will significantly aid Rohingya individuals who have fled oppression and will provide essential support during their time of need.
Since the military clearance operations in Rakhine State, over a million Rohingya have sought refuge in Bangladesh. Since August 2017, the U.S. has provided more than $2.5 billion in assistance to support these displaced communities.
