The Plight of Displaced Rohingya in Buthidaung and the Uncertainty of Returning to Their Villages

While tens of thousands of Rohingya are suffering without food and medicine, they want to return to their original villages even though their houses were burned to ashes by the Arakan Army (AA) in April and May of this year.

Since the AA controls the territory, it is all about the AA’s decision. On 23rd June, the displaced Rohingya from Ale Chaung village in Buthidaung Township were permitted to return to their original village from Sein Hnyin Pyar and other villages where they had taken refuge.

The AA announced that on 24th June, the displaced from Myaung Nah would be allowed to return, and on 25th June, those from Baggunah and Ka Kyet Bat would be permitted to return.

Today, on 24th June, tens of thousands of displaced people who had taken refuge in Sein Hnyin Pyar and other villages gathered in Tha Beik Taung (Haran Hali) village and prepared to return to their original villages.

However, on the morning of 24th June, the AA told them they would not be allowed to return as planned. They were not informed when they would be able to return. As a result, tens of thousands of people have been on the road since the morning. Since so many people can't shelter in the village, they are sleeping on the road and in paddy fields without tents, food, and other basic necessities.
